01 - DLA Vessels - 2005 RCA

This vessel is formed through a process called Diffusion Limited Aggregation (DLA) which has been modeled in a virtual environment. DLA is usually studied as an example of fractal growth processes such as branching, lightning, snowflakes, mineral deposits, and coral.

Developed in collaboration with 3D Systems and Paul Bourke.

The growth of the 3 dimensional structures is contained within a virtual envelop which is used to shape the structure into its end form. The structures forming the objects shown here are grown within the ‘virtual’ wall section of the vessel and are then brought into the physical through rapid manufacturing processes.
